On August 7, 2009, Roy and I celebrated our 50th anniversary with a trip to Boston and other New England sites. Over the years we have come to have special feelings for New England as well as the Pacific Northwest. After graduation from OHS, I attended Odessa College, Sul Ross State University and Texas A&M Commerce, achieving degrees from each institution. Each one provided special memories. Our lives are blessed with two sons, two terrific daughters-in-law and five grandchildren. David and his wife, Susan, live in Plano and have Mallory (18) and Michael (16). Philip and his wife, Amy, live in Flower Mound with Aaron (17), Ian (16), and Ellen Kate (12). Retirement continues to be interesting and enjoyable. After 35 years in education serving as a teacher, principal and central office administrator, I retired from Ector County Independent School District as assistant superintendent. Since that time I became a certified Permian Basin Master Gardener and thoroughly enjoy volunteering in that capacity, as well as landscaping our gardens. Quilting is still one of my passions and gives me the opportunity to share special events with my loved ones. My five sisters and I take trips together each year to the Houston International Quilt Festival and the Bluebonnet Patchwork Trail Quilt Shop Hop. Roy and I continue to work in a church-based Breakfast Ministry and serve each Friday to those who need the assistance. On a weekly basis, we purchase items for the breakfasts and sack lunches for the men, women, and sometimes children. Looking back at our time as students at OHS, we have fond remembrances of teachers, administrators and fellow-students. Those were good days and we are blessed to continue friendships from those days. Update 08/20/09.

Merita and I celebrated our 50th anniversary this year. It doesn’t seem possible that August, 1959 was really that long ago! We enjoy travelling and returned to one of our favorite areas, the New England states, to celebrate the anniversary. After graduation from OHS, we were fortunate to continue our education for a number of years, achieving degrees from OC, Sul Ross, ACU and Texas A&M Commerce. Each experience is full of fond memories. Upon completing my active duty obligation in the Navy, we returned to West Texas “for one year” – which has turned into a lifetime commitment. My teaching career began in Seminole. Three years later I was offered and accepted a position in student services at Odessa College. I remained at OC for 32 years, plus two years of leave in order to complete a doctorate. After my retirement from serving in Student Services and Human Resources, we have focused on more frequent visits with our two sons and their families. Fortunately for us, they live in the Dallas area. Itdoesn’t seem possible, but our oldest grandchild is entering Texas Tech this year. We are active in serving in a church-based breakfast program designed to provide a full hot breakfast and a brown-bag lunch to anyone who is hungry. We are in our 22nd year of this program. Retirement has allowed us to assume responsibility for the purchasing for this ministry each week. Each of us is active on church committees. Additionally, we’re involved in a weekly Life Group which has become a major joy for us. We also try to work in travelling. New England and the Pacific Northwest are two of our favorites. We look forward to continuing the things we are now involved in as well as exploring new events as they come our way. Update 08/20/09. |

The shortages of materials of all kinds led us to form a non-governmental organization for importing 'teaching' materials and negotiating with international agencies for donations and assistance-we are not building with a grant from USA Ambassador-which is why I can't make the reunion. Hope you will sing some 'oldies and goodies'. For all my sisters and friends interested in Life and Times of an Artist/// in 1991, I got insanely ambitions and made a 3 meter -bigger than life size MERMAID in ceramics clay. I

WELL: TODAY I received what seemed at the time an hilarious phone call "little secretary voice.." ....Miss Lucy, We are from the office of the So and So , your friend in the State House office Mr. so and so. He said that you know him "YES ,is uttered in a low voice.. ""sec//sez.." well we have a guest in the Seychelles from the EEU, visiting for the Seychelles University (Big $$$Donor Source!)..and he wondered WHAT WAS THE NAME OF THAT NICE STATUE MIGHT BE? picking myself off the floor I respond "Well my Dear IT is the BRIDE" ( she starts spelling it out) yes That is The Bride of Neptune N.e.p.t.u.n.e, yes thats right.. oh then I could not resist "?Honey , do you know who Neptune is? ......"er no 2/)teeth crashing me "well, don't tell anybody, he is the God of the Ocean .. King Neptune." silence then OH!. I told her not to worry I would be happy to speak to the Visiting Visitor so she wanted to give me his phone number KIDS it got even funnier.. but by evening I had had several phone calls returned by people "VETTING" who I was on this un-familiar" number (they called me first, remember?) and only in person can I tell the cast of characters...! but I do have a confirmed appointment Thursday, at 9:30 am in the National Children Library, (designated by me as appropriate place , because of the 30 ceramic portraits MASKS from history donated my me) so everybody will feel safe, I promised I was not going to try to sell him anything, but I would bring him a gift!" this is the happiest day of my life since they launched the Bride of Neptune and it is the first time in history that all those DUDES ever looked at her or asked her name! It will give me a big boost in my eternal search of support for the NGO, but most of all I can GRIN like the Cheshire Cat everytime I go to the Theatre! Janis Kay (Shera) Holloway 404 Comanche Altus,
OK 73521 |
After graduating from OHS in '59, OC in '61, and Texas Tech in '63, I married James (Jim) Shera in Dover, Delaware (46 years ago). He was a pilot in the Air Force, and his squadron commander would not let him leave, so we just moved the wedding from Odessa to Dover!! (This was not the last time that the Air Force would interrupt my plans, but I could be as stubborn as they were!) We were there for 5 1/2 years, and 3 1/2 years I taught at East Dover Elementary. Our two sons, Dale and Robert were born in Dover before we were sent to California. Again I taught school at the Crescent Elementary school for 2 1/2 years, before were reassigned to Altus, OK. I finished up my masters degree from Southwestern Oklahoma State University when our twin daughters were two. Our girls, Cherri and Christi were born two months after we arrived in Oklahoma (of course I had to spend the last month in the hospital--which was certainly not my cup of tea). Dale's wife Kay and their two children Gregg and Caitlan live in Arlington. Robby and wife, Darla, and their two girls Courtney and Kaci live in Edmond, OK., Christi and her husband John are waiting to be moved from Florida to California in the next couple of weeks. Cherri is still looking for her "Mr. Right" (but she is still not in any big hurry!) I had the opportunity of being the first early childhood instructor to be hired at Western Oklahoma State College, and got to watch it grow to over 90 plus degree seeking students. I had also started a College Lab school for 3, 4, and 5 year olds. We served 80 children during the school year. I was very busy in the Early Childhood field for years, serving as President of the Oklahoma organization twice, numerous committee positions for the regional, and as secretary and treasurer at the national level. For 15 years during my 28 years at Western, I served as the Phi Theta Kappa honor society's advisor, working with many students and accompanying them to regional and international events, and served as Sec., VP. and President of the National Advisors Association. I retired in '03 to be with my Mom, who had suffered a stroke and need my help. After she passed away, one of the Universities contacted me to help teachers finish their BA degrees. In two more semesters they will have completed their coursework (Yea!) I keep very busy with church activities, still teaching, and have just completed organizing the teachers workroom. I have served on the Red River Federal Credit Union for the past 25 years, and the majority of those years as the Sec./Treas. One of my loves (besides my children) has always been traveling. This year we have taken each of our children and their family on a trip, so it has taken us to NYC, Alaska, Boston, Branson, and one to come to San Francisco--who knows, we may run into you in some faraway place. Hope to see you in September! Janice K. Shera (Holloway) Update 08/27/09

Well, I called the telephone number in your web site and was absolutely blown away. His wife informed me that Johnny had died in 1996 of cancer!! I thought you'd want to pass it on. You can confirm at the number listed on your web site. Thanks - and good luck on the reunion!! George W. Hollis, 9310

In reading many of the bios of OHS classmates, I kept coming across the word "retirement". What a strange and wonderful sounding word! A word I am not familiar with - at all! As Kay Deberry put it, "Are you working until they carry you off to the
cemetery?!?" And I guess that is the way it's going to be. Don't know how many of you are
familiar with the Barnett Shale play, but it's oil field stuff and I just can't get it out of my blood! Except in the Barnett Shale case, it's Gas. (Please, no wise cracks here!) And up until a couple of months ago, we were drilling like H_ _ _ in the Barnett Shale! Great fun! Great company! And I'm very fortunate to be here. And when I'm not "Barnett
Shale-ing", I'm out diggin' up bones - working on my family tree, that is. Love it! Currently, planning a trip to Utah and the Library of all Libraries! Have never been, so it should be quite an adventure. Best of luck on the 50th Reunion! I know it'll be great! Update 03/24/09. |
